Pixel Watch 5 shifts Google's smartwatch from an assistant you summon toward one that tries to surface the right action before you ask. Contextual At a Glance cards, faster Raise to Talk, proactive Gemini suggestions, and a double-pinch confirmation gesture define the software story. Underneath, a Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated processor, 50% more RAM, and revised location processing make it more than a watch-face update. Google supports setup only with Android, but after that required first session, Merge can keep Pixel Watch 5 connected to an iPhone.
Complete Google's activation once
Use a phone running Android 12 or newer, install the Google Pixel Watch app, and sign in with the Google Account that will remain on the watch. Pair Pixel Watch 5 in Google's app, accept the terms and permissions you need, and let setup finish downloading system and app updates. An iPhone cannot perform this provisioning because Google does not provide the Pixel Watch companion app for iOS.
If the Android phone is borrowed, wait until the watch reaches its normal face and confirm that Play Store opens before returning the phone. Also initialize the Google Health services you plan to use. Some coaching, Gemini, safety, and health features require a supported region, account, internet connection, or paid Google Health Premium plan; activating the watch does not remove those conditions.
Move the everyday connection to Merge
With activation complete, the Android phone is no longer needed for the following pairing sequence.
- Get Merge Watch from the iPhone App Store and approve Bluetooth access when it opens.
- On Pixel Watch 5, use Play Store to install Merge Watch.
- Open the watch app, permit nearby-device access, and choose Start Pairing.
- On iPhone, go to Settings - Bluetooth and select Pixel Watch 5 while it is discoverable.
- Confirm the displayed pairing request, then return to Merge on the watch.
- Select the iPhone inside Merge to finish the app-level connection.
- Complete subscription setup if shown and grant only the notification and health permissions you want enabled.
How Pixel Watch 5 behaves with iPhone
Merge forwards chosen iPhone notifications to the watch and provides individual app controls, so a busy iPhone does not have to create a busy wrist. Contacts can sync for caller identification. The watch can operate iPhone playback controls and trigger the shutter while the iPhone camera is open.
Supported fitness information can be written to Apple Health: heart rate, steps, distance, calories, floors, and workout records with route and pace details. Native Google services remain separate. Merge does not make the Pixel Watch app appear on iOS, unlock a geographically restricted medical feature, or replace an account or subscription required by Google.
A new approach to location and workouts
Google says Pixel Watch 5 produces twice the route accuracy of Pixel Watch 4 in difficult environments. Rather than relying only on the satellite signal arriving at the wrist, the system uses 3D building models to reason about reflected signal paths and draws on weather-reference data to correct for atmospheric conditions. That is aimed at the places where compact watches typically struggle: streets between tall buildings and trails under dense cover.
Strength training also receives more attention. Google's upcoming on-wrist experience guides sets and rest periods while recording reps and weight, and Google Health Coach can build routines around a goal. Recovery data can alter a recommendation when sleep, heart-rate variability, or even environmental conditions suggest that a different session would be wiser. These coaching tools have their own rollout and subscription requirements, so check availability rather than assuming every feature is active on day one.
Health Guardian needs context, not hype
Pixel Watch 5 introduces breathing-emergency detection, launching first in parts of Europe. It combines optical pulse data, motion, pressure sensing, and on-device models to look for a severe, sustained oxygen drop; if the wearer is unresponsive, the watch can attempt an emergency call and provide location. Google states that the feature may miss events, is not intended for several pre-existing conditions, is not a prescribed oxygen monitor, and depends on working call connectivity. It has not been cleared or evaluated by the US FDA.
Three other Health Guardian additions are monthly wellness trends for blood pressure, sleep breathing quality, and insulin resistance. They are not live clinical measurements and are not diagnostic screens for hypertension, sleep apnea, or diabetes. Their value is in observing a longer pattern after roughly a month of wear, not in replacing medical testing or guiding medication.
What changed from Pixel Watch 4
Pixel Watch 4 introduced satellite SOS, on-wrist Gemini, and a repairable screen and battery. Pixel Watch 5 retains that foundation and focuses on speed and anticipation: Google rates it 20% faster overall, gives Gemini more offline core actions, and lets suggestions be accepted with a gesture. GPS processing is the largest workout upgrade, while sleep staging is claimed to be 15% more accurate and Smart Wake looks for a lighter-sleep window before an alarm.
The domed Actua 360 display remains a bright 3,000-nit design. Battery ratings are up to 30 hours for the 41mm watch and 40 hours for the 45mm version, and the repairable architecture continues. In daily iPhone use, the cleanest division is simple: Google features and sensors operate on the watch, while Merge carries supported notifications, controls, contacts, and health records across the ecosystem boundary.
