How to connect Apple Watch 8 to Android

Apple Watch Series 8 added Crash Detection and a wrist temperature sensor. This guide walks through connecting it to Android with Merge.

Crash Detection arrived with Apple Watch Series 8: a high-g accelerometer and gyroscope that recognizes a severe car crash and contacts emergency services over cellular - on the watch itself, no phone required. A wrist temperature sensor and 36-hour Low Power Mode came with it. Apple made all of this for iPhone users. Merge makes it available to Android users: one iPhone activation, then Series 8 pairs permanently to your Android phone, adding notifications, messaging, health data, and the Merge feature set alongside the standalone safety hardware.

What connects through Merge

Crash Detection and Low Power Mode work on the watch independently of any phone. Merge adds everything the watch can't do on its own. Android notifications arrive on your Series 8 in real time - all of them, from every app, with per-app controls so you tune exactly which alerts and which types come through. You can reply to messages and trigger quick actions directly from the watch, and music playing on your Android phone is controllable from your wrist.

Health data syncs to Google Fit and Health Connect: workouts, heart rate, wrist temperature trends, sleep, steps, and calories. ECG readings sync to the Merge app on Android as well - so that data isn't isolated on the watch. Find My works in both directions, letting you ring either device to locate it. The Smart Hotspot feature keeps the watch connected when it steps away from Wi-Fi, managed automatically by Merge without any manual hotspot switching.

The connection between Series 8 and your Android phone is end-to-end encrypted. It runs over Bluetooth when the devices are nearby and switches seamlessly to an internet link when they're in separate rooms or separate locations entirely - no interruption to notifications or health syncing.

One-time iPhone activation

Every Apple Watch needs an iPhone for initial activation. You do this once and the iPhone doesn't need to return after.

Series 8 supports watchOS 11, requiring an iPhone XS or later (or iPhone SE 3rd generation) running iOS 18 or later. Your own iPhone? The Watch app on your iPhone takes you through standard pairing. Using someone else's? Select Set Up for a Family Member from their Watch app - configure the watch with your Apple ID, and both Apple IDs need to be in Family Sharing, which you can create on the spot. After activation, watchOS updates go directly to the watch over Wi-Fi through Settings - General - Software Update.

Installing Merge

Both apps need to be in place before you start pairing.

  1. Open the Play Store on your Android phone, search for Merge Watch, and install it.Get it on Google Play
  2. On your Apple Watch, search for Merge Watch in the App Store and install it.Download on the App Store

Day-to-day with Series 8 on Android

Crash Detection is the feature that sets Series 8 apart: a high-g accelerometer and gyroscope combination that recognizes a severe vehicle collision and contacts emergency services directly over the watch's cellular connection, with no phone required. That safety capability operates independently of any paired device. Bluetooth 5.3, which Series 8 introduced to the lineup, provides a more stable connection over greater distances compared to earlier models - a meaningful improvement for Merge's notification relay when you're moving around the house. The wrist temperature sensor captures overnight body temperature trends that sync through to Health Connect. Low Power Mode stretches battery to around 36 hours for days when charging isn't convenient, and Merge holds the connection over the internet when phone and watch aren't in Bluetooth range.
