Apple Watch Series 12 is built around a new Health Sensing System and the S11 chip: heart rate sampled every five seconds all day, HRV measured up to 24 times more often than before, and a readiness score from 0 to 10 that recommends Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready, or Go For It. Cases come in 42mm and 46mm aluminum, titanium, and - for the first time in this generation - ceramic in pearl white and night blue, with Ceramic Shield 2 on aluminum models. Apple still ships it as an iPhone watch. Merge is the Android route: activate once on an iPhone, then Series 12 pairs to your Android phone for notifications, Google Fit health sync, and a persistent encrypted link.
What Merge brings to Series 12
Readiness, the new Heart Rate complication, and the Steps complication all live on the watch itself, so they keep working after the iPhone has left the picture. Merge then copies workouts, heart rate, sleep, steps, and calories into Google Fit and Health Connect, and ECG readings into the Merge Android app. That higher-frequency heart-rate stream is more useful on Android than it looks: more samples through the day means richer Fit timelines once Merge is syncing.
Android notifications land on Series 12 in real time. You pick which apps speak up and which alert types get through. Replies and quick actions stay on the wrist; music playing on the Android phone is controllable from the watch; Find My can ring either device. Sound Recognition, which listens for sirens, alarms, doorbells, or a baby crying, also runs on the watch even when no iPhone is nearby - a useful extra for Android users who never carry one day to day.
The Merge link is end-to-end encrypted over Bluetooth when the devices are close and over the internet when they are not. Smart Hotspot turns on by itself: when Series 12 leaves Wi-Fi, Merge manages the phone hotspot so the watch stays online without a toggle hunt.
One-time iPhone activation
Apple still requires an iPhone to activate every Apple Watch, Series 12 included. Borrow one if you need to; after that first setup the iPhone can go away.
Series 12 ships with watchOS 27, which needs an iPhone 11 or later or iPhone SE (2nd generation or later) running iOS 27 or later - a newer floor than Series 10. Using your own iPhone? The Watch app walks through the usual pairing. Borrowing one? Choose Set Up for a Family Member in their Watch app, sign in with your Apple ID, and keep both Apple IDs in Family Sharing, which you can create during setup. After that, watchOS updates install on the watch from Settings - General - Software Update over Wi-Fi.
Installing Merge
Get both Merge apps in place before you start pairing.
- On the Android phone, open Google Play, search for Merge Watch, and install it.
- On Apple Watch 12, open the App Store, search for Merge Watch, and install it.
Pairing Series 12 to Android
Stay within arm's reach for the Bluetooth handshake - discovery is fastest when the devices can see each other.
- Launch Merge on the Android phone and accept the permission prompts as they appear.
- Leave the phone app open, then open Merge on Apple Watch 12 and accept Bluetooth.
- Tap your Android phone when it shows up on the watch.
- Type the PIN from the watch into the phone. The pair finishes in a few seconds.
- Subscribe if you haven't already - the flow covers this next.
- Allow notifications and health access on the watch.
- Confirm health permissions on Android as well.
Day-to-day with Series 12 on Android
Everyday battery is still up to 24 hours, with up to 10 hours for an outdoor workout - about 25 percent more than the previous Series - and 15 minutes on the charger now returns up to 12 hours of use. That is enough to cover a forgotten overnight charge without parking the watch all morning. Readiness updates through the day as workouts and vitals come in, so the 0-10 score you glance at after breakfast is not frozen at wake-up. Apple's redesigned pedometer and the on-face Steps complication keep a live count on the wrist; Merge then files those steps with Google Fit. A new single-handed tap gesture opens Smart Stack widgets, and Workout Buddy can coach without an iPhone nearby - both useful once Series 12 is living on Android. Merge keeps notifications moving and the encrypted connection up whether the phone is in the next room or across town.
