Activation reality for Apple Watch
Apple Watch requires a one-time activation with an iPhone before cross-platform workflows are practical. There is no fully iPhone-free first activation flow today for standard watchOS onboarding.
The good news is that activation can be done once, including with a borrowed iPhone, and then your ongoing Merge usage can focus on Android workflows.
One-time borrowed-iPhone workflow
Use an iPhone only for first activation, initial watchOS updates, and app installation. After that, transition to your primary setup with Merge and Android.
This approach is common for work devices and dual-device users who do not want to keep an iPhone as the long-term anchor.
- Activate Apple Watch with any compatible iPhone once.
- Finish initial watchOS update and first app sync.
- Install Merge on watch and Android phone.
- Pair using the watch code and approve permissions.
- Validate notifications, media controls, and reconnect behavior.
What to expect after activation
After the one-time activation is done, everyday Merge usage can run from Android without repeating full onboarding. Keep both apps up to date and avoid aggressive battery restrictions.
If sync seems stale, opening Merge briefly on both sides is often enough to refresh state without re-activating the watch.
